Digital files or film negatives

I endeavour to keep digital files and film negatives in a way that will last the years. I have systems in place that ensures the physical security of the files and negatives, but I cannot guarantee that I will be able to produce any image, at will at an un-determined time in the future

Over time technology changes. I have no way of knowing if we will even be using film in 20 years time, or if compact disks and DVD’s will be readable on modern computers in say 10 years. We have seen the demise of Betamax, hand held film camcorders. Photographic film is barley used as it was before, and 78’s, wax cylinders, 45’s, vinyl singles are virtually non-existent. A floppy disk from the 70’s is unreadable on a modern PC, as is a HDD from the 80’s or early 90’s

The point I am making is that although I strive to maintain my image library, and transfer old files to new technology as the need arises, there is no guarantee of this for an individual image. For this reason I give a DVD with the reproductive copyright over for any album images supplied. I would urge clients to consider that disk as their negatives or hard copy, and look after it appropriately as time passes
